CLAUDE.md Best Practices: A Review Checklist
Audit CLAUDE.md instructions for accuracy, scope, conflicts, security limits, maintainability, and observable value.

What are CLAUDE.md best practices?
Keep the file concise, factual, scoped, and maintained. Prefer repository paths and verified checks over style slogans; separate temporary tasks; enforce security outside prose; remove obsolete rules.
Decision rule: Every line should answer a repeated repository question or prevent a demonstrated failure.
Use it in a real situation
A 500-line file contains copied framework advice, old paths, temporary release notes, and contradictory test commands.
- Name the observable outcome and the constraint that changes the decision.
- Choose the smallest action that can produce useful evidence.
- Keep permissions, uncertainty, and side effects visible before execution.
- Run a check that could disprove the approach, then record what remains unknown.

From vague request to reviewable result
Task or input
Classify each rule as stable fact, verified command, boundary, temporary task, duplicate, or obsolete; keep only the first three in permanent guidance.
Better result
The shorter file routes agents to current code and checks while task-specific release details move to the issue brief.
How to verify it
Compare success and correction effort on two representative tasks before and after the audit.
Three mistakes to avoid
Copying without adaptation. Replace repository, data, user, and authority assumptions with facts from your environment.
Treating prose as enforcement. Use permissions, validation, tests, and human approval for boundaries that must hold.
Calling one success proof. Re-test the decision with a different input or context before treating it as a durable skill.
