Claude Prompts for Research with Source Checks
Build Claude research prompts that define scope, separate evidence from inference, record citations, and expose missing information.

How do you prompt Claude for reliable research?
Define the decision, date boundary, allowed source types, required evidence fields, uncertainty labels, and what to do when sources disagree. Then verify cited claims against the source itself.
Decision rule: A citation is useful only when it supports the nearby claim and can be opened and checked.
Use it in a real situation
A product team needs current pricing and limitations for three APIs before choosing a prototype.
- Name the observable outcome and the constraint that changes the decision.
- Choose the smallest action that can produce useful evidence.
- Keep permissions, uncertainty, and side effects visible before execution.
- Run a check that could disprove the approach, then record what remains unknown.
Original ClaudeQuest worked example
From vague request to reviewable result
Task or input
Use official documentation only, record access date, quote no more than needed, separate stated facts from comparison inferences, and mark unavailable data.
Better result
The table links each time-sensitive claim to an official page and keeps the recommendation separate from sourced facts.
How to verify it
Open every cited page, check claim alignment and date, and remove conclusions that rely on missing or outdated evidence.
Three mistakes to avoid
Copying without adaptation. Replace repository, data, user, and authority assumptions with facts from your environment.
Treating prose as enforcement. Use permissions, validation, tests, and human approval for boundaries that must hold.
Calling one success proof. Re-test the decision with a different input or context before treating it as a durable skill.
